It is possible that Prince-Archbishop Sigismund Christoph Graf Schrattenbach commissioned the composition and divided it among the Salzburg masters W. A. Mozart (Part 1), Michael Haydn (Part 2), and Anton Cajetan Adlgasser (Part 3) (the manuscripts of the latter two have been lost). With "The Obligation of the First Commandment," Mozart closely follows the Salzburg tradition of church and school music; his models may have been Johann Ernst Eberlin and, likely, his father Leopold as well. The premiere of Mozart’s "Schuldigkeit" took place on March 12, 1767, in the Knights’ Hall of the Princely Residence in Salzburg. The libretto for the Singspiel was written by Ignaz Anton Weiser (1701–1785), a city councilman and also mayor of Salzburg.

Mozart notated numerous appoggiaturas in this early work, thereby providing a guide to the art of singing of his time. In Aria No. 2, an instructive passage featuring vocal ornamentation by Leopold Mozart has been preserved.

The easily playable piano reduction by K.-H. Müller was prepared based on the New Mozart Edition.
