Klabund’s poems strike a very distinctive tone: concrete, vivid scenes, almost naive words—and yet, precisely because of this, they address with great seriousness the central questions of love, longing, happiness, and its transience.
The ambiguous timbre of the verses is captured through apparent breaks in the musical language: iridescent avant-garde chords meet the melodic turns of a chanson; dissonant, dry piano motifs contrast with a few brief waltz measures—and all these contrasts interact and engage with one another.
