Handel composed these nine two-part movements for soprano and instrumental bass between 1728 and 1747. There is only conjecture as to the reasons for their composition and exact dating.

Händel underlaid the vocal part with short liturgical formulas such as "Amen", "Allelujah", "Alleluja, amen" and "Amen, alleluia". The editor has provided a text supplement for the movement HWV 275, which for unknown reasons has no text. The Amen and Alleluia movements are in simple keys (up to a sharps and two flats), and the modulations hardly aim for harmonically distant areas. The bass was figured extensively by Handel and mostly takes on an accompanying and supporting function, in a few parts also imitating the vocal part. The singing is mainly characterized by the repetition of motifs, by repeated notes, but also by more or less extended coloratura. These movements were presumably intended for music lessons.

Today, these short movements of 25 to 76 bars in length are well suited for use in church services.
