Karg-Elert's organ, harmonium and piano music has been systematically rediscovered since the 1970s, but his song works were initially ignored. Wrongly so, as his 200 or so solo songs are high-ranking compositions that also include a wealth of musical forms, from through-composed to strophic songs. Editor Ernst Breidenbach also contributes to the rediscovery of these gems with several concerts and a recording of selected songs on CD.

The lyricists set to music by Karg-Elert come from five centuries; it is striking, however, that there are many authors among them who, although contemporaries of the composer, are committed to the aesthetic ideals of the 19th century and whose poetry is oriented more towards the norms of classicism and romanticism than towards current trends in poetry. The Lessing cycle is a special case, with which the composer breaks new ground due to his choice of text.

Karg-Elert was considered an outsider by his colleagues and in the music world: he oriented himself not only towards the German avant-garde, but also towards the European avant-garde around Debussy, Scriabin and the young Schoenberg, and this cross-border aesthetic orientation was bound to meet with rejection in the increasingly conservative climate of the post-war years.
