Description:
As a 20th century composer, Gerard Bunk has developed an unmistakable musical style, comparable perhaps to that of Max Reger or Sigfrid Karg-Elert. In addition to Bunk's large organ work: "Legende" op. 29 and its symphonic version op. 29II, the other "Legende" op. 55b for organ and string orchestra (or string quartet) from 1945 is also known. This edition offers the earlier version of this work from 1914 in the original scoring for organ and wind quartet. It was composed in Bielefeld in the circle of Johannes Kuhlo, known as the founder of the trombone movement. In order to facilitate a broader reception in musical practice, the sketchily notated score has been carefully supplemented with designated performance markings from the string version.
What Albert Schweitzer praised in the "first legend", "the calm and vivid arrangement of the whole", is also recognizable in Bunk's later composition: in addition to the catchy, simply beautiful theme, the clear musical form of this "legend" for organ and brass quartet.
