Description:
Spanish Dances (Parody IX) was commissioned by the Louisville Brass and awarded First Prize at the 2003 International Trumpet Guild Composition Competition. The Louisville Brass gave the premiere performance at the ITG Conference in Fort Worth, Texas, USA in the same year. The work is not ''stylistically Spanish'', nor was it intended to be, but the 3 movements are inspired by traditional dances and structured in classical forms: Habanera/Sonata, Pavane/Variations, Bolero/Rondo (with themes from the first two movements). I have written several works for brass subtitled Parodie, which are either based on existing music or, like the present work, on familiar musical styles, often with ethnic or national references. I use the term parody (Greek: parôdia = distorted song) in the medieval sense (transformation of a musical work) and without satirical intentions. Stanley Friedman, 2003, Memphis, TN, USA
