Christian Rummel (also Chrétien Rummel), music educator, pianist, clarinetist, violinist and composer, was born in Gollachostheim, Franconia. He received his musical education in Mannheim. Initially, Rummel was a military bandmaster. After his military career, he moved to Wiesbaden, having been offered a position as a music teacher there. Later he directed the court chapel in Biebrich and after its dissolution he became Kapellmeister at the theater in Wiesbaden. On the occasion of a trip to Vienna, the music publisher Schott recommended him (letter of April 19, 1824) to Ludwig van Beethoven with the request for 'friendship and goodwill', because he possessed 'urge for perfection in the study of composition'. The slumber song is dedicated to Baron Breidbach-Bürresheim. The melody is taken from the opera 'La muette de Portici' (The Silent of Portici) by the composer Daniel-François-Esprit Auber (1782-1871), which was first performed at the Paris Opera in 1828. The plot is set in a fishing village near Naples. It is about love, marriage, revolt against the Spanish occupiers and, as if that were not enough, the volcano Vesuvius erupts at the end. The piece was published in 1832 by Schott (record number 3733).
