Description:
The flute concerto in G minor, HWV 287, is presented here in a first edition. Although the work has been available as an oboe concerto in volume IV/12 of the Hallische Händel-Ausgabe since 1971, it has always been regarded as dubious due to the lack of contemporary sources. It was believed that the concerto was written by an amateur musician who had used material from Handel's works from around 1733. However, the research situation changed drastically when a contemporary set of parts, a copy of the concerto made in Stuttgart for the Hereditary Prince Friedrich Ludwig of Württemberg, was found in 1993. This copy of the parts ("Concerto à 5 for 1 Flut Travers e Hautb , 2 violino , 1 Alto Viola Col Basso continuo "), dating from around 1720, proves that the composer used material from this concerto for other compositions, such as the organ concerto HWV 296a, the Concerto grosso op. 6/11 or the Trio Sonata in G major HWV 390.
This new scholarly-critical edition by Terence Best, which enriches the repertoire of flutists with a "new" work, is the first to evaluate this new source discovery.
A detailed preface and a critical report complete the score.
