The famous Pavane for orchestra was composed by Gabriel Fauré in 1886. Two years later, at the suggestion of the dedicatee, the instrumentation was expanded to include choral parts based on verses by Verlaine. In 1919, Fauré integrated the Pavane together with "Claire de lune" into his one-act divertissement "Masques et bergamasques". In Fauré's original, the winds and in particular the flutes dominate. It therefore makes sense to make this work accessible to an ensemble of three flutes. The charming, cantabile melody is not only reserved for the first flute, it runs through all the parts of the trio.
