While his contemporaries still regarded him as one of the greatest musicians of all time, Telemann's star faded in the course of the 19th century in the oversized shadow of Bach and Handel to the point of disdain. This assessment changed radically over the course of the last century. Through the systematic development of his work, the one-sided view of the instrumental composer expanded to include a highly educated, culturally well-connected and artistically enormously versatile personality who had a decisive influence on the musical life of his time. His works repeatedly reveal an individual approach that seems to abandon the musical conventions of his time, both on a large and small scale.

The Tafelmusik (Musique de Table), a three-part collection of chamber music works for various instrumentations, is perhaps Telemann's most famous musical creation. Composed in 1733, Tafelmusik illustrates Telemann's skill in dealing with a wide range of musical genres and a variety of instruments.
