Debussy originally wrote 'Syrinx', a work in the thoroughly French tradition, in 1913 as incidental music for the play 'Psyche', which his friend, the poet and playwright Gabriel Mourey, had written.

'Syrinx' first appeared in print in 1927. In addition to the first edition, a non-autograph, handwritten copy, which was officially used by Louis Fleury, the flautist at the premiere, has survived. However, the manuscript, which must have served as a model for the first printing, has not survived, and the two existing sources differ in many details.

The present critical-scholarly edition primarily uses the first printing as its basis, incorporating musically convincing readings of the handwritten copy.
