In England hielt sich die Technik des Division-Playing bis ins 18. Jahrhundert als typisch englische Musiktradition. „Division“ bedeutet vom Wort her „Teilung“, nämlich die Teilung bzw. Auflösung eines Themas in kleinere Notenwerte in einer Kette von Variationen (a set of divisions) über einen ostinaten, also immer wieder kehrenden Bass, dem „Ground Bass“ oder „Ground“.
Dieser Band beinhaltet Divisions, die nicht in der Sammlung „The Division Flute“ enthalten sind: größere Kompositionen von Gottfried Finger sowie Purcells herrliche Chaconne c-moll „Two in one upon a Ground“ aus seiner Oper „Prophetess, or the History of Dioclesian“, eine Chaconne im ernsthaften und getragenen Charakter, in der Purcell die Oberstimmen kunstvoll im Kanon führt. Mit einer Aussetzung des Basses als Melodie für eine Altblockflöte gibt es diese Chaconne auch als Blockflöten-Quartett für drei Alt- und eine Bassblockflöte (MVB 26).
