Description:
The "processes" referred to in the title are to be understood as a sequence of evolving developments, similar to a set of variations. The composition is based on the melody for the chorale text "Nun danket alle Gott" by Martin Rinckart (1586–1649). Whether the melody was composed by Rinckart himself or by Johann Crüger (1598–1662), who included it in his hymnal *Praxis pietatis melica* ("Exercises in Piety through Song") in 1647, is a matter of debate. Since the end of the 17th century, this chorale has been an integral part of the Protestant Hymnal. In "Prozesse," the text is not interpreted; rather, the work consists of seven self-contained "variations" that reflect on the musical score. The recorder was a natural choice for this composition, since, on the one hand, it was one of the most widely used instruments at the time of its composition, and, on the other hand, to strip the beautiful, simple melody of the chorale of the pompous, even political baggage that has clung to the song since the 18th century ("Chorale of Leuthen").
