Description:
Adolphe Sax, the brilliant inventor of the saxophone (patented in 1846) was appointed Director of Stage Music at the Paris Opera between 1847 and 1894. This was the ideal place to promote and experiment with his instruments in the orchestra - the inventor eventually imposed the saxophone in some lyrical, symphonic, ballet and of course regimental music. The instrument made numerous appearances, first timidly mixed with the orchestra and then in truly picturesque solos.
