Alexander Konstantinovich Glazunov (1865–1936) was director of the Russian Symphony Concerts and of the St Petersbourg Conservatory and is regarded as one of the great masters of instrumentation, orchestration and counterpoint. He moved to Paris in 1928 and there composed the Concerto in E flat for alto saxophone and piano (1934), an authentically romantic work that has enjoyed unrivalled success since its première.
