Along with blues, gospel, spirituals, and European marching music, ragtime is also one of the precursors of jazz. The American composer and pianist Scott Joplin can rightly be called the "King of Ragtime," as he developed this genre as a piano style and composed a large number of such pieces. The term "ragtime" is thought to derive from the expression "ragged time" and refers to its characteristic syncopated rhythm. Among the many arrangements of popular ragtime pieces by Scott Joplin and his contemporaries, this collection includes a version of "Pineapple Rag" for saxophone quartet, featuring two alto saxophones, a tenor saxophone, and a baritone saxophone.
