Like a passacaglia, a chaconne consists of an ostinato—that is, a constantly repeating theme—which is varied in many different ways throughout the piece. This musical form provided composers with an appealing model, especially during the Baroque period. The chaconne from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Partita in D minor for solo violin is arguably the most famous of its kind. For his five-part saxophone composition, Albert Loritz uses the Mixolydian scale—which dates back to the Middle Ages—based on the root note F. Compared to a major scale, the seventh degree here is a half-step lower; that is, it is not E but E-flat. This B-flat is introduced in a striking manner as early as the second measure of the theme, thereby establishing the mixolydian character. (Annette Kutzer)
