Description:
This piece was written for Roland Szentpali and Janos Mazura as a compulsory piece for the quartet competition they organized at the International Tuba/Euphonium Conference 2004 in Budapest (Hungary). Salutations, the first of the 4 miniatures, was originally conceived as a concert opening for the US Army Brass Quintet, hence some free military signal reminiscences. The other movements were developed from the material of this first movement. The Toccata finds its inspiration in the 2nd movement of the Four Sketches, the magnificent Brass Quintet written by Anthony Plog in 1989 (Editions Bim). This movement makes use of various combinations of mutes and reeds that bring out the virtuosity of the players. The Lament leads into a meditative atmosphere where the tubas are in the foreground. The last movement, Jubilation, encompasses all the thematic material of the previous miniatures before the work ends with a musical exclamation mark. Michael Forbes
