Dvorák's great "Requiem" was commissioned for the renowned music festival in Birmingham. Since its premiere there under the composer's direction in 1891, it has enjoyed great popularity. It is based on the liturgical Requiem text, but was intended from the outset for a full-length concert performance. In the "Requiem", Dvorák unfolds the entire spectrum from religious devotion to drama and sorrowful lamentation in an inimitable way and with impressive depth of expression. Bach's cross motif from the second Kyrie of the "Mass in B minor" may have been the inspiration for the chromatic musical core idea, which is taken up as a death motif in almost all movements. The choir plays a central role in the work. With one exception, Dvorák includes it in all 13 parts. The version of the work published by Carus corresponds to the autograph score, which - unlike the first edition and a copy used at the premiere - precisely reproduces Dvorák's differentiated dynamic instructions. Autograph additions from the conductor's score are included, and individual annotations provide detailed information about the differences between the sources. With this critical new edition of the Requiem setting, Carus continues the publication of Dvorák's sacred works. In addition to the score, piano reductions in normal size and in reader-friendly large print, choral score, purchasable orchestral material and practice aids for the choir (in preparation) are available (score and piano reduction also digitally).
