Description:
Since its first complete performance in Bremen Cathedral in 1868, Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem has undisputedly been one of the key works in the history of oratorio. The work's status results not only from its unusually dense musical texture, but also from its original textual idea: Brahms himself compiled key passages from the Old and New Testaments in Luther's translation in such a way that the central ideas of "mourning" and "consolation" are clearly related to one another. In contrast to many other 19th century oratorios, Brahms places the choir, the voice of the community, at the center of his interdenominational funeral service.
The critical edition is based on the first edition of the score authorized by Johannes Brahms.
Thanks to the arrangement for chamber orchestra (arr. J. Linckelmann Carus 27.055/50), it is also possible to perform the work on a smaller scale. Also available is an arrangement of the orchestral part for two pianos (Carus 23.006/03).
