Description:
Queen Caroline, wife of the British King George II, died on November 20, 1737, and Handel was commissioned to write an anthem for the funeral service. The Queen was buried in King Henry VII's Chapel in Westminster Abbey on the evening of December 17, 1737, and Handel's work was performed after the funeral service. Handel used an orchestra of around 100 musicians and around 80 choristers to emphasize the solemnity of the event.
The Funeral Anthem is a so-called "full anthem". It consists of an instrumental introduction, the "Symphony", and thirteen choirs that are not clearly separated from one another. The text was written by Edward Willes, who was Dean of Westminster at the time. He had compiled sections of text from the King James Bible and the Book of Common Prayer, but altered the original wording in places. The choral scoring of the individual parts throughout makes the anthem a rewarding task for any committed choir and a highlight in any concert program.
The edition contains the original, unabridged version with English text. The piano reduction by Martin Focke follows the Urtext of the Hallische Händel-Ausgabe.
