Heinrich Schütz beendete 1671 86-jährig sein kompositorisches Schaffen mit der monumentalen Vertonung des 119. Psalms, in einem Anhang ergänzt um die Vertonung des 100. Psalms sowie die eines deutschen Magnificat. Von den acht Vokalstimmen der 'Schwanengesang' genannten ganzen Werkgruppe sind zwei verlorengegangen, sodass diese in der erhaltenen Fassung nicht aufführbar ist. Da aber der Kompositionsstil von strenger Regelhaftigkeit geprägt ist und die beiden Teilchöre oftmals gemeinsames motivisches Material haben, kann der Versuch unternommen werden, aus dem Erhaltenen das Verlorene zu erschließen. So ist das Werk 1984 in einer von dem Dresdner Schütz-Forscher Wolfram Steude rekonstruierten Fassung erstmals veröffentlicht worden und seither in vielen Aufführungen erklungen. Die Neuausgabe von Werner Breig im Rahmen der Stuttgarter Schütz-Ausgabe bietet eine neue aufführbare Fassung. Dabei konnten für zahlreiche Stellen andere Rekonstruktionsmöglichkeiten empfohlen und überdies manche bisher unentdeckten Fehler berichtigt werden.
