The nine short chants of Schubert's "German Mass" (1827) are not only among the composer's best-known and most frequently performed church works, even by amateur choirs, but were even included in the Austrian section of the "Gotteslob" (No. 802). This unusual popularity and appreciation is based on the one hand on the appealing German text version (by Johann Philipp Neumann) compared to the official Latin version, and on the other hand on the simple song-like character of the music. In her new edition, the editor Salome Reiser goes back to the autograph of the second version of the mass, which adds 15 chordal harmony parts to the first version accompanied only by organ, giving the catchy work its specific timbre.
