The cantata "O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort" BWV 60 for the 24th Sunday after Trinity, which belongs to Bach's first Leipzig cycle, is one of Bach's few dialog cantatas. It deals with the conflict between fear (alto) and hope (tenor) in the face of death, which also includes the large chorale arrangement that opens the cantata. In a surprisingly dramatic trick for a Baroque church cantata, the bass joins in as the third voice (in the function of the vox Christi) in the penultimate movement, the recitative "Death remains hateful to human nature" (fear) with the biblical words "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord". This also convinces fear and leads into the four-part final chorale "It is enough, then Lord take my spirit".
