As part of the "Great Oratorio Cycle" of 1730–31, Georg Philipp Telemann’s two-part oratorio for St. John’s Day was premiered.
Originally performed in two parts before and after the sermon during the church service, Telemann’s work is more likely to be performed in a concert setting today. This previously unknown work, lasting approximately 45 minutes, features a rich instrumental and vocal ensemble (solo parts for 2 sopranos, an alto, a tenor, and 3 basses, plus strings, flutes, oboes, horns, and timpani) and is also appealing to soloists and choirs.
