Description:
The cantata "Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern" (BWV 1) was composed on March 25, 1725, when the Feast of the Annunciation coincided with Palm Sunday. It forms the conclusion of Bach's choral cantata year 1724/25.
The unknown librettist retained stanzas 1 and 7 from Philipp Nicolai's song (1599), which, although traditionally associated with the feast of the Epiphany, was also sung on the Annunciation. Verses 2 to 6 form the basis for the two tenor and bass recitatives as well as for the soprano and tenor aria.
Bach's composition is given a particularly festive glow by the participation of two horns, two oboes da caccia and the two solo violins playing in concert, with the lively figurations of the two violins making it easy to recognize the image of the twinkling morning star.
