The cantata Ich glaube, lieber Herr, hilf meinem Unglauben BWV 109, composed for the 21st Sunday after Trinity in 1723, is characterized as a dialogue between unbelief and faith: While the dense opening chorus, interwoven with concertante elements, stands for the conflict between faith and unbelief and the wavering continues in the following recitative, the first aria ("Wie zweifelhaftig ist mein Hoffen") stands entirely for unbelief. The second pair of movements, recitative ("O fasse dich, du zweifelhafter Mut") - aria ("Der Heiland kennet ja die seinen"), on the other hand, is characterized entirely by faith and confidence. A large-scale final chorale with interludes ("Wer hofft in Gott und dem vertraut") brings the cantata to a hopeful close. In addition to strings and two oboes, this cantata features one of those enigmatic chromatic brass instruments (slide trumpet?) that only appear in Bach's first cantata cycle.
