Description:
The three great motets Quam dilecta, In convertendo and Deus noster refugium, which Jean-Philippe Rameau composed between 1713 and 1715, are still relatively unknown today. The reason for this can be seen in the fact that they were not understood in the 18th century and the revival of In convertendo in 1751 at a concert spirituel even led to one of the composer's most bitter defeats. And yet these motets are masterpieces. They are a testimony to Rameau's great contrapuntal mastery and contain beautiful lyrical passages. Quam dilecta and Deus noster refugium have only survived in late sources, which were only written after Rameau's death around 1770 and reproduce the works in an instrumentation that no longer corresponds to Rameau's intentions. As Quam dilecta and Deus noster refugium have only survived in posthumous sources and were adapted to the tastes of the time, this new edition attempts to restore the original form of both motets as far as possible.
