Charpentier wrote "In nativitatem Domini canticum" during his time as Kapellmeister at the church of Saint Louis in Paris (around 1690). The work is in the tradition of Carissimi's oratorios and those of his contemporaries, but is more commonly referred to as a "grand motet" or "histoire sacrée", a genre in which Charpentier composed at a uniquely high level. It was probably intended to be performed during mass on Christmas Day and therefore had a liturgical function, as was customary in Paris at the time of Louis XIV.

The text presents the Christmas story in three sections: the choir of the faithful, the actual story of Jesus' birth and the veneration by the shepherds in the field.

The music shows a subtle mixture of French and Italian stylistics with dramatic elements.

In this first edition, the renowned Charpentier expert Joel Schwindt provides a scholarly-critical edition of the work, taking all sources into account. A detailed text section with a critical report meets all the Urtext criteria.
