Description:
Iphigénie en Aulide is the first of six operas that Gluck composed on behalf of the Académie Royale de Musique. In line with his reformist ideas, the composer declared that he wanted to create noble, sensitive and natural melodies that would do justice to every language and every national soul and eliminate the "ridiculous distinction" between national musics. Although the premiere was initially received cautiously by the contemporary press, "Iphigénie" developed into a great success. The rush of the audience is said to have been so great that the management of the Paris Opera House considered posting guards outside the theater.
The carefully revised and corrected piano reduction, adapted to the current Bärenreiter standards, is now published by Bärenreiter in a new edition.
