Für viele Chorsänger ist 'Jesu, meine Freude' nicht eine, sondern die Motette Bachs. Und tatsächlich ist es unter den Ausnahmewerken, als die man Bachs Motetten insgesamt bezeichnen muss, wiederum ein Ausnahmewerk, das nicht nur durch seine zeitliche Ausdehnung aus dem Rahmen fällt. Auch die formale Anlage mit den in 11 Sätzen abwechselnd vorgetragenen und nach einem symmetrischen Bauplan angeordneten Choral- und Bibelversen ist singulär. Komponiert wurde die Motette höchstwahrscheinlich für eine Trauerfeier, doch über die näheren Umstände ist nichts bekannt. Deutliche Anzeichen gibt es hingegen dafür, dass die Motette, wie wir sie heute kennen, wohl nicht in einem Guss komponiert wurde, sondern das Ergebnis eines längeren Entstehungsprozesses ist.
