Description:
First critical edition. The oratorio "Judas Maccabaeus" is one of George Frideric Handel's most popular vocal works. It was performed over fifty times during his lifetime and was one of the first of his works to be performed in Germany (1772). The frequent performances by Handel himself also led to a particularly large number of adaptations to take account of local circumstances. This new edition therefore offers the work in two performable versions: that of the first performance in 1747 and that of the last oratorio season during Handel's lifetime (1758/59). This means that all the choruses and arias Handel ever composed for "Judas Maccabaeus" are available. In accordance with recent Handel research, the edition is based for the first time consistently on Handel's conducting score and thus not only eliminates traditional errors, but also provides clarity about the pieces actually performed by Handel. In contrast to the previously popular Chrysander edition, the aria "Father of heav'n", which introduces the third part, appears here in its original, longer version.
