Sacrilege or a stroke of genius? The composer and Kapellmeister Gottlob Benedict Bierey (1772-1840) orchestrated the first movement of Beethoven's famous "Moonlight Sonata" for orchestra (transposed to C minor) and added a four-part choral movement to it, which he underlaid with the text of the Kyrie from the Latin Ordinary. The result is as astonishing as it is harmonious! For the present edition for choir and piano, in which Beethoven's sonata movement functions as a kind of piano reduction, the key of C sharp minor, to which pianists are accustomed, was retained.
