Description:
The German-Italian composer and Rheinberger pupil Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari was very successful with his comic operas at the beginning of the 20th century. His early work "Die neugierigen Frauen" premiered in Munich in 1903 and was later performed under Toscanini at the MET in New York. One of Wolf-Ferrari's few smaller choral works is the short religious song "La Passione" op. 21, in which he sets a popular text from Tuscany, similar to the texts sung at Passion processions. Mary is looking for her son, her dialog partner reports that he saw him on the Way of the Cross. Simple yet chromatically dense and intense, Wolf-Ferrari impressively sets the pain of the mother and her son to music. An exciting new discovery for Passion concerts. The chant is available in two versions by the composer: for choir SATBB (Carus 6.511/00) and for choir SAM and Pfte (Carus 6.511/50), both printed and digital.
