Dieterich Buxtehude composed his greatest oratorical work, the cantata cycle Membra Jesu nostri, for the Passiontide of 1680 and dedicated it to his friend and Swedish court conductor Gustav Düben. In the seven individual cantatas, which in principle all follow the scheme "instrumental introduction - choral movement with biblical text - vocal solos (aria) with medieval sacred poetry - repetition of the choral movement", the feet, knees, hands, side, chest, heart and face of the crucified Christ are interpreted allegorically.

The original string instrumentation of No. VI ("Ad Cor") consists of a consort of 5 viols. If such a consort is not available, the parts of viola da gamba I/II can be taken over by violin I/II and the part of viola da gamba V by the violone (the notes are already included in the respective parts), so that in this case only 2 viols (III, IV) are required. Only two copies of the gamba part score (Carus 36.013/16) are required for such a performance.
