Soli SATB, Coro SATB, 2 Ctr, Timp, 2 Vl, Bc. Chiemsee-Messe - Unter Haydns über dreissig Vertonungen des lateinischen Ordinariumstextes nimmt seine laut Autograph am 5. August 1793 beendete Missa in honorem Sanctae Ursulae eine herausragende Stellung ein. Sie kann als die 'mozartischste' seiner Messen apostrophiert werden. In der liedhaften Melodik, der Einheit des motivischen Materials und dem ausgewogenen Zusammenklang von festlichen und verinnerlichten Abschnitten zählt die Messe zu Haydns gelungensten und inspiriertesten Werken. Mit der Besetzung von zwei Trompeten und Pauken zusätzlich zum Salzburger 'Kirchentrio' entspricht sie dem Typus der für festliche Anlässe bestimmten 'Missa solemnis'. Der volkstümliche Beiname Chiemsee-Messe resultiert aus der Entstehungsgeschichte des Werkes. Haydn schrieb sie für die musikbegabte Nonne Sebastiana Oswald im Benediktinerinnen-Kloster Frauenchiemsee. Über ihren ursprünglichen Bestimmungsort hinaus fand das Werk rasch Verbreitung, was zahlreiche Abschriften, besonders in österreichischen Klöstern, belegen.
