Among Haydn's more than thirty settings of the Latin Ordinary text, his Missa in honorem Sanctae Ursulae, completed on August 5, 1793 according to the autograph, occupies a prominent position. It can be apostrophized as the most "Mozartian" of his masses. With its song-like melody, the unity of the motivic material and the balanced harmony of festive and internalized sections, the mass is one of Haydn's most successful and inspired works. With the scoring of two trumpets and timpani in addition to the Salzburg "church trio", it corresponds to the type of "Missa solemnis" intended for festive occasions. The popular nickname Chiemsee Mass results from the work's genesis. Haydn wrote it for the musically gifted nun Sebastiana Oswald at the Benedictine convent of Frauenchiemsee. The work quickly spread beyond its original destination, as evidenced by numerous copies, particularly in Austrian monasteries.
