Survived in two versions: 1st version composed in 1736/37, 2nd version in the first half of the 1740s. Differences only in the instrumentation; both versions have been integrated in this edition.

Johann Sebastian Bach's funeral composition O Jesu Christ,meins Lebens Licht BWV 118 exists in two versions, which essentially only differ in the instrumentation. The first version was composed in 1736/37 and uses only brass instruments in addition to vocal parts. The instrumental designation "Litui" is puzzling; it probably refers to horns in high Bb tuning. The later version, which probably dates from around 1746/47, requires string instruments instead; it also allows the participation of 3 oboes and bassoon, probably to reinforce the vocal parts.

Neither the original compositional occasion nor the reason for the later revision are documented by sources. The instruments used make it likely that the original version was played during a funeral procession or at a graveside; the church setting (or at least a warmer time of year) seems appropriate for the later version.

The two versions are identical in terms of musical substance, except that the instrumental prelude and interlude are repeated again at the end in the later version.
