Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy completed his first oratorio - "Paulus" op. 36 - in 1836 at the age of 27. The first version, which was premiered on May 22, 1836, underwent extensive revision. This second version, which was also the basis for the printed version, was premiered in Birmingham in October of the same year.
The triumphal march that the oratorio then embarked on is unusual. Just 18 months after completing the score, Mendelssohn was able to record the 50th performance.
Robert Schumann was effusive in his praise of the work, and even Richard Wagner was full of admiration. Today, "Paulus" is part of the core repertoire of sacred vocal music.

The source-critical Urtext edition of the oratorio, edited by the internationally renowned Mendelssohn specialist Michael Cooper, offers for the first time not only the main text of the work but also the numbers composed for the first version and subsequently removed. It enables the original version to be performed and provides an insight into the history of the work's composition. The appendices of the score and the piano reduction with the numbers of the first version are not included in this choral score.

The score and piano reduction offer the German and English text of the oratorio, the piano reduction follows the one Mendelssohn wrote himself.
