The Whitsun cantata Erschallet ihr Lieder was composed for the first Whitsun holiday in 1714 and was performed several times in Leipzig in slightly different versions. Performances in 1724 and 1731 are documented (our edition offers the 2nd and last Leipzig version in C major). The cantata opens with a catchy, jubilant opening chorus. The cantata's only recitative, a bass recitative on a word of Jesus from John 14 ("Whoever loves me will keep my word"), leads to a series of arias, the first of which, "Heiligste Dreieinigkeit" for bass, 3 trumpets and continuo, contains perhaps not the most difficult, but nevertheless the most virtuoso of all Bach's trumpet parts! The second aria for tenor and strings in unison follows on directly with large, cantabile arches rich in contrast. The third aria, a duet, was accompanied by the obbligato organ in 1731 (alternatively oboe and violoncello as in the earlier versions). As in many of Bach's Weimar cantatas, the final chorale contains an independent upper part for violin.
