The setting of Psalm 98 was written within a few weeks as a commissioned composition in Mendelssohn's new position as Prussian General Music Director and was premiered by the Berlin Cathedral Choir on January 1, 1844. Mendelssohn did not publish the work and did not compose a piano reduction himself. The psalm setting was therefore only published after his death.

For this edition, the renowned Mendelssohn specialist John Michael Cooper relies primarily on the autograph with its numerous subsequent improvements and entries. In this respect, this edition differs from many others, which tend to regard the autograph as a subordinate source. An informative preface and the detailed critical report round off the Urtext edition. The piano reduction is based on the first edition published in 1851 by F. Kistner and Evers & Co.
