Description:
Bach composed the double-choir motet "Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf" for the funeral of his direct superior, the rector of St. Thomas' School Johann Heinrich Ernesti, in 1729. Ernesti had held the office of rector for more than 40 years, and an era came to an end for St. Thomas' School. The performance probably took place in the University Church of St. Pauli rather than St. Thomas; Ernesti was also a professor at Leipzig University. "Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf" is the only motet by Bach for which duplicate instrumental parts have survived (Choir I: strings, Choir II: woodwinds, Bc: violone and organ). However, the instrumental parts do not include the concluding chorale; was this not performed in the church but a cappella at the graveside?
