Description:
The cantata BWV 127 belongs to the year of choral cantatas that Bach performed in Leipzig in 1724/25. It is closely related to the "St. John Passion", which was performed in its second version on Good Friday 1725. In terms of form, text interpretation and instrumentation, the cantata is one of Bach's most astonishing vocal works. Even the opening chorus with its multi-layered construction is a worthy preliminary stage for the choral fantasia "O Mensch bewein dein Sünde groß". The aria "Die Seele ruht in Jesu Händen" is characterized by exquisite instrumentation: A solo oboe and the soprano form a duet, the background consists of delicate chords from the recorders and continuo, which are intended to symbolize death bells. A solo trumpet lends particular brilliance to the following movement. The words "I break with a strong and helping hand" unmistakably anticipate the chorus "Sind Blitze, sind Donner in Wolken verschwunden" from the "St. Matthew Passion".
