Monteverdi's "Vespers of Mary" has found its way into today's musical practice like hardly any other work of the 17th century. However, the "Vespers of Mary" also presents us with many puzzles. The source-critical Carus edition addresses the much-discussed questions of scoring possibilities, performance practice, transpositions and liturgical unity. The performance material is so flexible that in movements without obbligato instruments, very different instrumental amplifications of the vocal parts are possible, thus inviting an individual and artistic approach to the challenge of the "Vespers of the Virgin".

Critical edition

- Early handwritten additions in the printed copies have been taken into account in the edition, but not included unmarked

Flexible performance material
- A piano reduction and an inexpensive choral score are available for the choir
- Colla-part parts are available for all psalms and the hymn
- The colla-part parts each contain the complete vocal parts, they are textualized, the beginning of each new verse is indicated.
- The parts are flexible and allow a variety of scoring options; in double-choir pieces, for example, winds and strings each contain the parts of both choirs
- Alternative scoring options are suggested in the preface, but not prescribed.
- The performance material allows performance in Monteverdi's maximum scoring but also with reduced scoring without the three violas.

Editor Uwe Wolf is a specialist in the notation practice of the early 17th century and has extensive editorial experience. He has published on the Marienvesper several times and held seminars on it at various universities. He has also contributed his own practical performance experience from numerous performances of the Vespers in Germany and abroad, in which he has participated as a cornettist.
