Description:
In his roles as Kapellmeister at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris and in the royal chapel of Louis XV, André Campra composed numerous grand motets, which often show stylistic influences from contemporary operas. Although Campra is known today almost exclusively for his famous Requiem, his more than 40 "motets" composed for soloists, choir and orchestra are still waiting to be discovered. These include his setting of the 129th psalm De profundis, which is presented here in a new critical edition based on the autograph score. The work was composed in 1723 during the first months of Campras' service to the French king and proves to be on a par with the compositions of Michel-Richard de Lalande, who had shaped and dominated the genre of the "grand motet" at the time.
