Description:
The cantata "Erforsche mich Gott und erfahre mein Herz" BWV 136 was composed during Bach's first year in office as Thomaskantor in Leipzig and was premiered on the 8th Sunday after Trinity, July 18, 1723. We do not know the poet of the libretto. The title line is taken from the 23rd verse of the 139th Psalm, which reads: "Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know what I mean." The opening chorus is an extended fugue, framed by an energetic string section. The obbligato horn accentuates and enriches the movement with a special timbre. The alto aria in F sharp minor (movement 3) consists of a trio movement with an oboe d'amore as the solo instrument in a contrasting arrangement - a Presto middle section that dramatically charges the words "Denn seines Eifers Grimm vernichtet" (For his zeal destroys). In the tenor and bass duet (movement 5), the text is performed line by line, sometimes in imitative polyphony, sometimes the tenor and bass effectively join together to form a homophonic block. A simple chorale movement on the melody "Auf meinen lieben Gott" concludes the cantata. The violin, which joins the four vocal parts as an independent voice, is particularly attractive here.
