As with many of Homilius' cantatas, the unusual formal structure of the cantata "Kommt, frohe Völker, herzu" for the 4th Sunday after Epiphany, with two choral movements in a cantata of only three movements, is immediately noticeable. The generally festive, thanksgiving character without any direct reference to the Sunday Gospel makes this cantata, which is carried by chant-like melodies, suitable for a variety of uses during the church year.
