Description:
Bach's cantata "Gott soll allein mein Herze haben" BWV 169 comes from the third Leipzig cantata cycle; it was first performed on October 20, 1726 on the 18th Sunday after Trinity. Recent research has revealed that the text was written by the Leipzig student Christoph Birkmann. With the exception of the final chorale, it is a solo alto cantata, albeit with a rich orchestration: three oboes, obbligato organ and strings. The first, purely instrumental movement is based on a now lost instrumental concerto, after which Bach also composed the Piano Concerto in E major BWV 1053. The lyrical and vocal climax of the work, the fifth movement, is also arranged according to this concerto and demonstrates Bach's art of arrangement to perfection. In between, there is a recitative-like vocal movement and another aria with an almost virtuoso organ accompaniment.
