Description:
The cantata "O heilges Geist- und Wasserbad" BWV 165 is one of Bach's earliest cantata compositions and was probably first performed for the Feast of the Holy Trinity in 1715 in Weimar's Schlosskirche. With its instrumentally simple scoring for strings and bc only (including bassoon), the cantata offers an alternative to the later Leipzig cantatas for the Feast of the Holy Trinity, also with regard to the pictorial interpretation of the libretto by Salomon Franck. In the two expressive recitatives and the three varied arias, Bach repeatedly emphasizes the central words of the text, which focuses on the importance of being born again of the spirit through baptism.
