Description:
En fin. He is an ecolier of whom I must not be ashamed, is how J. S. Bach summarized the qualities of his later son-in-law J. C. Altnickol. Among the few surviving works by Altnickol are two Sanctus on a Gregorian cantus firmus. While Altnickol chose a polyphonic choral setting for the second of these compositions, in the present Sanctus he has all four voices perform the chorale in unison, accompanied by a polyphonic string ensemble. In both compositions, however, he proves to be a contrapuntal composer who does full justice to Bach's assessment.
